In 1991, Checkers chain of supermarkets was bought from Shoprite Holdings. At that time Checkers had 170 stores in their portfolio and was not in good financial times. After since that year the brand was managed under the Shoprite umbrella for 10 years. In the year of 2001, the two brands, Shoprite and Checkers, were separated. Checkers is the second major brand after Shoprite. The Checkers chain is divided into Checkers supermarkets and a few hyper markets named Checkers Hyper. Nowadays the chain is one of the preferred shopping destinations by the South African citizens.
