In 1971 the first Makro store was open in Germiston. Since then Makro has grown rapidly and became one of the leading chains in South Africa. By that time, Makro was the first cash-and-carry store using top-end technology for stock and sales tracking. By the year of 1989 Mark Lamberti (Managing Director) formed a professional management team with who established a strategy for growing the Massmart, a wholesale and retail group of which Makro was the cornerstone. In 2011, Massmart merged with the Walmart, which gave new opportunities for Makro and enriched the assortment of the offered items and brands.
The most famous retail Makro’s store is Woodmead, built in the year of 1993 in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
In 2013, Marko open its newest store located in Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu- Natal region.
